Music History Wednesday : Johann Pachelbel Canon in D Major

johannchristophpachelbel_

This piece is probably more familiar to many of you. Canon in D Major experienced its popularity in the 70s and 80s through a recording by Jean-Francois Paillard  and its use in the film Ordinary People (1980). The piece somehow made its way to weddings rivalling Wagner’s Bridal Chorus. Canon in D Major’s chord progression is widely used in pop music in 20th and 21st Century it has been called “almost the godfather of pop music”. Although I am not entirely sure whether this is a good thing. 🙂

In anycase, baroque music always a soft spot in my heart. Enjoy!
