Ancient Music Wednesday : Byzantine female hymnographer, Kassia

Studying history continues to make me realise that I may have been wrong in understanding what life was like ‘back in those days’. It comes to my surprise that a woman would be involved and actively producing musical pieces for the church in Medieval times. Kassia is one of them. Apparently, she is one of the first medieval composers whose scores are both extant and able to be interpreted by modern scholars and musicians like the one you hear here, which was done by VocaMe.
